Things to Do and Excursions
The excursion and adventure possibilities in Bern and its neighboring regions are almost endless. Discover the variety.
Below are some recommendations from the conference organizers. However, it's worth to visit also the official website of Bern Tourism to check all options. There are options for the weekend stay in Bern or the Bernies Oberland, for relaxing dinners after an intense conference day or the afternoon program on Tuesday. Enjoy and have fun!
Bern’s Old City
Bern’s Old City has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983, wowing visitors with its impressive sandstone buildings and incomparable charm. Also typical for the city are its quaint alleys and the six kilometres of arcades.
Within walking distance you can explore the Federal Palace of Switzerland, Zytglogge, the Münster and the "Bärengraben" (Bear Pit).
Guided City Tours
Incorporating the city’s landmarks as well as its secret corners and hidden treasures, providing both historical background and amusing anecdotes, Bern’s city tours are as diverse as the city itself. Informed and interesting, funny and astonishing, historical and topical: the tours are instructive, exciting, and at times spooky – but always entertaining.
Shopping, Food & Drinks
Stores, markets and boutiques: Bern is a shopper’s paradise. And thanks to the six kilometres of arcades, you can enjoy your shopping trip in any weather and relax afterward in one of the cozy café in the Old City.
Swimming in the River Aare
Who needs the sea? When the weather warms up, Bern locals love to splash around in the open-air swimming pools or spend the summer swimming, rafting and surfing in the Aare river.
Gurten, the Bernese Local "Mountain"
Idyllic "mountain" oasis, fast-paced tobogganing paradise or legendary open-air festival site – Bern’s local "mountain" excites both young and old. Via the link you will find some recommendations for the ultimate Gurten experience.
We put mountain between quotation marks: the Gurten is only 850m above sea level. If you like to explore the real mountains of Switzerland, we recommend a trip to the Bernies Oberland (see next item in the list).
The 'Berner Oberland' and the Alps
A trip to the Bernese Oberland promises pure alpine feeling. Whether it's a boat trip on Lake Thun, climbing the Niesen mountain or even a trip to the Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe), the Alpine region offers both adventure and enjoyment.
